Abstract

ABSTRACT
The study focused on the isolation and characterization of bacteria in plastic water tanks at the University of Abuja to evaluate their potential health risks. Water samples collected from the tanks were analyzed for total aerobic bacterial counts, coliform counts, and bacterial species. Results revealed high microbial loads, with total bacterial counts ranging from 2.1×105 to 4.4×105 Cfu/mL and coliform counts from 2.4×103 to 3.3×103, exceeding acceptable water quality standards. Morphological and biochemical analyses identified Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as the predominant bacterial isolates, with E. coli being the most frequent (27.3%). The presence of these pathogens indicates fecal contamination and poor water storage hygiene, posing significant public health risks and therefore recommends regular cleaning, disinfection, and proper sealing of water tanks.
